Professor Marcio Lemos started training martial arts when he was 15 years old, through Capoeira. He has had the privilege of receiving coaching from many jiu-jitsu legends, such as Marcelo Rezende, Marcio Feitosa, Flavio Almeida Roberto Tussa, and Master Carlos Gracie Jr.
He was born in the city of Porto Alegre in southern Brazil. In 2004 he migrated to New Zealand where he lived and taught Jiu-Jitsu in the city of Queenstown for two years. In 2006 he migrated to Sydney where he began practicing jiu-jitsu under professor Marcelo Rezende and became part of the Gracie Barra family.
In March 2010, Marcio took his first step towards the realisation of his dream, The Jiu Jitsu Academy Gracie Barra Hornsby was created. The Gracie Barra Hornsby aims to bring up good people and to offer a place were students can grow, not just as fighters but as people .
Professor Marcio Lemos is the founder of Gracie Barra Hornsby and Gracie Barra Pymble.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is centered round the skill of taking an opponent down to the ground and wrestling for dominant control positions from where the opponent can be rendered harmless.
To control and overcome greater size, strength and aggression with lesser size and strength is the keynote of the sport. This is done by utilizing superior leverage, grip and position upon your opponent. Students of the sport gain a deep understanding of the workings and limits of the human body.
"If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."
I had my first contact with Jiu-Jitsu when I was in the army, but I decided to train a few years later in 2011 where I started training Jiu-Jitsu in Porto Alegre with the professor and sergeant Max Jonas. I remember that Jiu Jitsu was an escape valve from a tiresome and stressful routine, where I used to feel tired after work and could only thought about going home. However, I would still go training and even with exhaustive training sessions I would leave the mat feeling much better from when I arrived.
Over time the love and joy of training Jiu-Jitsu increased, and I managed to conquer the blue, purple and brown belts until I reached the black belt.
One of the greater opportunities I received through Jiu-Jitsu was when in 2016 Professor Marcio Lemos offered me the opportunity to work with Jiu-Jitsu at the GB Hornsby, where I am until nowadays.
Although today I'm a black belt I'm sure I still have a lot to learn, but I also have the conviction that I have a lot to give back to Jiu-Jitsu for all the joy and well-being that this martial art has brought me. My plan is to keep showing the community and our students all the benefits that Jiu-Jitsu can bring to them.
Professor Lih started training Martial Arts when she was 17 years old, through Muay Thai. One year later she decided to give Jiu Jitsu a chance, got in love with the art and never stopped training since then.
She was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu works not only with the body, but also with your mind. It is my safe place in the hard times. It’s when I feel at home, and where I can feel complete. It helps to grow your confidence, courage and self-esteem. I am a truly believer that if everyone would practice Jiu Jitsu, the world would be a better place.
Success is never owned, is rented. And the rent is due every single day!

After years of office work, I was looking for a new challenge, that would push me both physicall and mentally.
Bjj is a skill that will teach you many aspects of self defense, but in my opinion, it is the non-jiujitsu and fighting related benefits that are the most beneficial. This includes things such as mental fortitude, increased problem solving skills, and hardening that never say die attitude.
"Over the past two years, I've dedicated myself to BJJ. I've gained 8lbs of muscle mass and I'm in the best shape of my life. I've met and become friends with a great group of guys."
"This is the best martial arts discipline I have ever been involved with. I'm glad I took up BJJ and really made a great decision with Gracie Barra here at Irvine just off the I-5."
